Doris Malone

Doris Freitag Malone passed away on July 19, 2020 at McCamey Convalescent Center, which had been her home since October 2014. She was 99 years of age.

Doris was born on November 14, 1920 to J.G. (Buck) and Tonie Strey Freitag in San Antonio, Texas. Her grandparents, on both sides, were German immigrants. The Freitag family moved to Fort Stockton in 1932, with their four daughters, and began a 36 year ranching career on the Roy Henderson ranch.

Doris and her three sisters attended Fort Stockton schools and she graduated in 1937 with honors. She was captain of the girls’ softball team and played the position of catcher. Teammates called her slugger because of her batting ability. She was a fan of all Panther/Prowler football, baseball, and softball. She rarely missed listening to Ken Ripley, Doug May, and Darren Hodges announce the games on the Fort Stockton based radio station KFST. She was the oldest living graduate of Fort Stockton High School.

Doris was an excellent horsewoman and loved to ride horses with her sisters. Her father said his daughters were “better cowboys than the cowboys he had working on the ranch”. He allowed Doris and her older sister, Sophia, to accompany him, and the ranch cowboys, to drive (on horseback) a large herd of sheep down the Sanderson highway into Fort Stockton to the stock yard, to be shipped by rail to market. It was a two-day trip, stopping at the Stockton Tank, about ten miles south of Fort Stockton, for the night, and onto Fort Stockton early the next morning. It was twenty-five miles from the ranch to Fort Stockton, on what was the then (1935) a dirt road. After delivering the sheep, they started back (on horseback) to the ranch.

After graduating in 1937, Doris took a post graduate course in Junior Business and went to work at the Pecos County Courthouse working as a stenographer to Christine Stevenson and Judge Casebier. It was during this time that Doris met a young cowboy, Bill DeMoville, who was working for the Baker/White ranch in eastern Pecos County breaking horses. They later married and had four children.

She was a Christian and had been a member of First Baptist Church, Fort Stockton, since 1952. She was baptized in the cool, clear water at Comanche Springs, when the pool was natural and original. Her favorite book and chapter in the Bible was 23rd Psalm which she read daily until her vision deteriorated.

She remarried later in life to Bill Malone.

She is preceded in death by her parents J.G. (Buck) and Tonie Strey Freitag; first husband C.A. (Bill) DeMoville and second husband, B.E. (Bill) Malone; infant son Charles DeMoville, son Pecos Demoville and infant daughter Barbara Sue DeMoville; sisters Sophia Howell, Ruby Vick, and Joycelyn Graves; grandson Clinton Charles DeMoville; and son-in-law J.A. McGuire.

She is survived by one daughter, Toni DeMoville McGuire of Fort Stockton; grandsons Gene McGuire (Gaynell) of Midland, Texas, Scott McGuire (Susan) of Fort Stockton, Texas, Jeff DeMoville (Gail) of Midland, Michigan, and Paul DeMoville of Alpine; granddaughters Denise McGuire (Phil) of Mendon, Michigan, Rachel DeMoville Fail of Dallas, Texas; great grandchildren Matthew McGuire, Jonathan McGuire, Abigail McGuire, Collin McGuire, Dee Shea Sawyer, Renee Verette, Matthew DeMoville, and Grace DeMoville; great grandchildren Lily, Jack, and West Sawyer, Kendall and Jayci Surber.



A private service will be held by the family.
