With great love and fond memories, we announce the passing of Roy C. Smith Jr. on May 8, 2026, at the age of 88. Born in Henrietta, Texas, Roy lived a life filled with adventure, joy, and laughter. He will be celebrated for his vibrant spirit and dedication to family and friends.
Roy had a zest for life that was evident in his love for fishing and deer hunting, cherished pastimes that brought him joy and peace. His family was his pride and joy, and nothing made him happier than spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were the sunshine of his life. Known for his quick wit and humorous comebacks, Roy had a unique gift for making those around him smile.
As a devoted fan of the Longhorns and the Dallas Cowboys, Roy enjoyed watching football and cheering on his favorite teams. He made a significant mark in his career as a compressor mechanic and later served as a consultant in the oil and gas industry, an accomplishment he held dear.
Roy's commitment to his community was evident in his years of volunteer service with the Fort Stockton Fire Department, where he demonstrated his willingness to help others.
He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Betty Bassham; his children, George Smith of Pecos and Beth Lambert (Dennis); five grandchildren, Robert Smith (Lyndsey), Stephanie Duncan (Matt), Colby Jones (Courtney), Steven Smith (Jessica), and Vanessa Duncan (Casey); and thirteen great-grandchildren. Roy is also survived by 5 grand children 9 great grand children and 9 great great grandchildren from Betty's family. Roy is also survived by his sisters, Christy Cook (Donavan) and Shanda Smith of Lake Arrowhead, Texas, along with many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends who became family.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mattie Smith; his first wife, Betty Smith; his mother-in-law, Bea Winget; his son, Roy Glenn Smith; his stepson, Donnie Bassham; and two sisters.
A service celebrating Roy's remarkable life will be held on June 20th time and place to be determined as the family wishes to honor Roy's wishes that his celebration of life be a party filled with laughter. Gary Raines will be officiating the services, and the family can not thank you enough for being there for our Dad.
A special thank you to Marisela Cruz for always being there for Pepa, and to Argelia Prieto, RN, with PCMH Hospice, Kalash Bajaj MD with Texas oncology and Ananda Ghimire PA-DMS, PCMH Family Care. Tonya, and Billy Shuttleworth from B's Cafe and Express Nursing for the exceptional care you provided to our beloved father and Pepa. Your kindness will always be remembered.
As we gather to celebrate Roy's life, let us carry forward his legacy of love, laughter, and camaraderie.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made in Roys name to Alzheimer Association, American Cancer Association, American Heart Association, Wounded Veterans Association and Project Hope.
