Maria (Mary) Nunez of Fort Stockton died peacefully on Sunday evening, March 6th, 2016, while at the home of her daughter in San Diego, CA, at the age of ninety-three. She suffered a stroke in December soon after moving to San Diego. She was born in Saucillo, Mexico, the youngest of six children, on April 22, 1922. She and her family came to the United States on a family passport before she was one year old.
Mary began her career in retail sales in 1940 and continued until she retired in 2001. She soon grew tired of retirement and then to work a few days a week at the Annie Riggs Museum until her ninetieth birthday. She was a member of the Pecos County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for more than thirty years. She was a founding member of the Fort Stockton American GI Forum Auxiliary. She was a very active member of Saint. Joseph Catholic Church, serving on several boards including the Fiesta de San Juan Tiny Tot contests. She and her husband were honored as Mr. and Mrs. Fiesta de San Juan as well as Mr. and Mrs. Fort Stockton.
Mary's passions were her large extended family and there was nothing she liked as much as having everyone there to get together. She enjoyed cooking, especially when having people over to share a meal. She enjoyed her yard, even on one hundred degree days, as you would always find her outside. She was an exceptional seamstress and had a drapery business on the side for several years.
Mary was known for her soft nature, her smile, her willingness to help others, and her love and affection for everyone. She was also known for saying and fighting for what she believed in. Within the large extended family, she was everyone's favorite Aunt Mary, the person that everyone could lean on and depend upon for a kind word of advice. She was affectionately known as Aunt Mary, even by those who were not related to her.
Her real enjoyment came from activity within the community and participation in things that served to make life better for others. If there was something going on in the community, you would probably see her and her husband there. She and her husband enjoyed dancing even into their eighties and never missed an opportunity to dance.
Mary is survived by her daughter: Jo Ann (Nunez) Thomas from San Diego, California and her grandson, Scott Thomas and his wife, Veronica; her countless nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces and great-great nephews and nieces.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband: Manuel R. Nunez; her parents: Mateo and Maria Nieto; her sisters: Aurelia Gonzales, Margarita Scott, Enemencia Almanza and Socorro Gonzales; her brother: Francisco Nieto.
Visitation will be at Heritage Funeral Home from 4pm to 7pm on Friday, March 11, 2016. Rosary will be recited on Friday night. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday, March 12, 2016, starting at 2pm at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Stockton. Burial will follow at Fort Stockton Catholic Cemetery.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and her warm smile. She always walked the extra mile and leaves a large footprint and legacy for all who knew her.
