Charles Edward Stegall was born of February 12, 1936 to Robert G. and Virgina Jones Stegall in Alpine, Texas. He passed away July 2, 2018 in Fort Stockton, Texas. He graduated from Sanderson High School in 1954 and attended Sul Ross State University, graduating in 1959. He married his high school sweetheart Nancy Mitchell Stegall October 6, 1956. Upon graduating from Sul Ross they moved back to the ranch in Pecos County where Charles and Nancy built their ranching business.
Charles was never on to sit on the sidelines and watch. He served his community in many ways. He was a director of West Texas Boys Ranch for many years. He was a deacon and later served as an elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Sanderson. Charles was instrumental in rebuilding the Sanderson Roping Arena and often served as President of the Sanderson Rodeo Club. He was a long-time board member for the NRCS, National Resource Conservation Service. Charles retired in 2016 as a Terrell County Commissioner where he worked to re-establish a medical clinic for Sanderson, reconstruct better ditches, among many other projects. Charles and Nancy started the Terrell County Hunter's Feast held they first weekend of December to provide a way to generate funds to give back to the community. He was a member of the Sheep and Goat Raisers, American Boer Goat Association, Predators Control Board, Terrell County Fair Board, and American Border Collie Association. Charles was passionate about his border collies, often traveling the dog trial circuit, he loved team roping, but most of all he loved life. He donated goats to the Clover Bud kids in Sanderson to instill and to teach them basic animal care. Charles always cared about his community, whenever there was a need he did his best to assist.
Charles Stegall, "Pa" was survived by his wife, Nancy Stegall; daughters, Darlene Stegall of Fort Stockton, Judy Stegall Houston (Clay) of Sanderson; son, Robert Stegall also of Sanderson; grandchildren, Shawn Stegall of Oklahoma City, OK. Brandee Stegall, Portales NM. Crystal Perez, Fort Stockton, Trevin Houston, Madison Houston, and Kolby Houston from Sanderson. He also leaves behind his friend and ranch foreman, Jose Longoria; nephew, Clay Mitchell (Marka) and two great nephews, Trey and wife Julie and Colby Mitchell.
Services to be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Sanderson, Texas, on July 5, 2018 at 10:30 am. Burial will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Ed Long, John Lannom, Bob Childress, Norman Kohls, Warren Cude, and Alan Childs.
Honorary Pallbearers are Herbert Holmes, Harry Holmes, Jimmy Childs, Darrel Seidel, Chago Flores, and Kenn Norris.
