Aurora Urias Gutierrez, 93, of Fort Stockton, Texas, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2026, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith, family, patriotism, and public service.
Born on May 15, 1933, in Fort Stockton, Texas, to Santiago “Jimmy” Urias and Irene Mesa Urias, Aurora was the eldest of nine children. A proud lifelong resident of Fort Stockton, she had a deep and abiding love for her hometown and the people who called it home.
Aurora's life was grounded in her unwavering faith in God and her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her faith was not simply something she professed; it was something she lived. It guided her values, shaped her character, and inspired her lifelong commitment to helping others. Aurora was a longtime member of St. Joseph and St. Agnes Catholic Churches in her earlier years. She later found her spiritual home at Fort Stockton Christian Center.
Independent, determined, and blessed with a formidable work ethic, Aurora built a distinguished 42-year career with the City of Fort Stockton. Beginning in a clerical position, she ultimately rose through the ranks to become City Secretary, a position she held until her retirement. Her accomplishments were especially meaningful at a time when Hispanic women faced significant barriers to professional advancement. Aurora met those challenges with intelligence, hard work, and a fierce determination to succeed. During her tenure as City Secretary, Aurora worked to secure grant funding for important municipal infrastructure projects, including improvements to Fort Stockton's water system.
Retirement did little to diminish Aurora's commitment to public service. Following her career with the City, she successfully ran for a seat on the Fort Stockton City Council, where she served for two years. Her remarkable work ethic and desire to remain engaged continued long after her years in public office. She operated her own notary business into her early 90s.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Aurora generously devoted her time and talents to numerous civic and charitable organizations, including Rotary Club, United Way, Pecos County Appraisal District Board, Meals on Wheels, Keep Historic Fort Stockton Beautiful Board, and the Pecos County Hospital Auxiliary, among others. Her commitment to helping others also extended to mentoring young people through Fort Stockton High School’s Vocational Office Education (VOE) program. Over the course of her career with the City, she hired and mentored generations of high school students, many of whom went on to build successful careers. Decades later, many still credit her guidance and encouragement as an important influence in their lives. This was just one example of Aurora’s lifelong commitment to helping people at every stage of life realize their potential and achieve their goals.
Aurora was also deeply patriotic. She loved the United States of America and cherished the freedoms and opportunities it afforded. Her love of country was matched by her pride in Fort Stockton, the community that shaped her life and to which she devoted so much of her own.
Those who knew Aurora will remember a woman of remarkable strength and spirit. Funny, feisty, and fiercely independent, she possessed a sharp sense of humor, a generous heart, and a determination that few could match. Above all, Aurora loved her family and took tremendous pride in the lives and accomplishments of her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Enrique Humberto “Henry” Gutierrez; her parents, Santiago and Irene Urias; her sisters, Eustolia “Toli” Avila and Asteria “Yella” Hernandez; and her brother, Antonio “Tony” Urias.
She is survived by her daughters, Florinda Gutierrez Baldridge and Jocellyn Gutierrez Rivera; and her son, Humberto “Bert” Gutierrez (Diane). Her family grew to include six grandchildren: Jeremy Baldridge, Jonathan Baldridge (Hayli), Gabrielle Gunnels (Logan), Danielle Henderson (Nick), Anjelica Van Hoozer (Drew), and Aiden Rivera; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Jimmy Urias (Mary), Petra “Nila” Acosta (Benjamin), Ologadia “Oly” Martinez (Richard), Gumecindo “Gummy” Urias (Corina), and Lorine Sotomayor, all of whom were a cherished part of her life.
Pallbearers are Jeremy Baldridge, Jonathan Baldridge, Aiden Rivera, Samuel Acosta, Jorge Benavente, and Paul Guerra.
Her influence will endure in the community she helped shape and in the lives of those she loved.
