Arlouine Cummings Humphrey

Arla Humphrey “MawMaw”, 96, made the light in heaven a little brighter on March 10, 2022.

Arla was born on Aug. 25, 1925 in South Bend, Indiana to John and Marie Cummings. She grew up in New York and made her way to Texas after marrying Amos Humphrey on Sept. 3, 1946. They lived in Del Rio, Tx for over 50 years where they raised three children, owned multiple businesses and had a cattle and goat ranch.

Arla had a servant’s heart and a love to volunteer. Arla was a go-getter who made a difference everywhere she went. She served in many organizations throughout her life and jumped in with both feet with everything she did. She enjoyed serving as the Chairman of the Republican party for many years in Del Rio with the highlight being invited to Ronald Reagan’s Inaugural Ball.

Arla took civil service seriously earning her Deputy Sheriff's badge in 1992 being the oldest female in Texas to graduate from police academy at the time. She hauled prisoners from Florida to California and was very proud of her badge.

Arla lived in Craig, CO for several years where she was involved with the Chamber of Commerce and Catholic Church. She spent lots of time snowmobiling, camping and hustling Texas Hold ‘em. She made many dear friends in Colorado that stayed close to her heart.

MawMaw moved to Fort Stockton in 2007. In her normal fashion, she became a member of the Chamber of Commerce and became immersed in the town she loved to call home. She served on the Board, in the Ambassadors and on many committees helping with any and every event she could. Some of her favorite events were the annual banquet and Glitz. She quickly became everyone’s “MawMaw” and she loved it.

Arla was proudly one of the founding members of the Pecos County Dinner Tonight Club which thrives to this day. She was honored as Cook of the Year and spent countless hours doing what she loved to do; cook, feed and entertain. She loved every moment with her dear Cooking Club and was honored to be recognized at the 10 year anniversary. The bonds she formed with Karan, Glenda and all the members were ones she always spoke so fondly of.

Arla had a strong faith and served her Lord. Some of her most favorite times were early morning Sunday School with Rev. Miles and crew at Sagebrush. She loved her church and church family.

Arla had a quick wit, ferocious sense of humor, amazing style and a heart of gold. A true woman before her time, a “steel magnolia.” She loved helping people and giving back. Heaven gained a beautiful angel that will be missed so dearly.

Arla is preceded in death by husband, Amos; son, Ford Humphrey and brother, Eugene Cummings.

Arla is survived by her beloved furbaby, Chloe; daughter, Diane Chamberlain and husband, Phil; son, Scott Humphrey; grandchildren; Pam Pepper Palileo and husband, Luis; Bruce Pepper and wife, Stacy; April Stanley and husband, Brett; Kiah Swinney, Scott Humphrey Jr. and wife Claudia; and Crystal Rivera.
